The African Dance Theatre – 44 Long Street (cnr Hout Street)

The original Space Theatre was founded in 1972 and quickly established itself as a defiantly non-racial venue, actively opposing the apartheid laws of the time. The first fringe theatre in the country it mounted close on 300 productions, pioneering the work of Athol Fugard, John Kani, Winston Ntshona, Pieter Dirk Uys and Fatima Dike. The African Dance Theatre aims to resurrect its long-standing legacy.

Situated on the first floor of the beautifully restored three-storey building in Long Street, the venue boasts a 174 seat theatre. The building itself houses two restaurants, a bar, art gallery and coffee shop which can be booked for private functions. Tastings of great South African wines will take place prior to each show and wines can be ordered or shipped to a destination of your choice. Arts, crafts and curios will also be available in the foyer. This makes it the perfect spot for a cultural evening in the city.
